John A. Spence record book, 1855-1865.

Record book of John A. Spence contains day-to-day accounts for newspaper advertising and printing expenses connected with the Calcasieu Press as well as various records pertaining to Confederate Army conscripts, military orders, army furloughs, and deserters during the U.S. Civil War. Army records include entries made by a Confederate Army Enrolling Officer in Calcasieu Parish, La., recording physical description, place of birth, occupation, and date of enrollment of conscripts; registers of furloughs; copies of general orders regarding men who have failed to show up for enrollment; and records concerning arrests of deserters and free men of color who have not been provided with proper passes. Copies of general and special orders, circulars, instructions, and related items received at Headquarters, Enrolling Office, Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish, 1864-1865, are also included.
